Hobbs History
Hobbs was settled in 1907 and officially declared a city in 1937. From the prairie town of its beginnings, to the progressive and prosperous city it has become, Hobbs continues its path into this new century with ever increasing opportunities for financial and personal growth for its citizens. This pioneer spirit that gave birth to our community still guides its growth and attracts people of like mind and spirit to bring their varied skills and talents to contribute to the tradition of success and pride so evident here.
Hobbs has grown from a small, energy-based settlement to a major economic entity of over 30,000 citizens with an increasingly diverse base of technologies and industries. As this growth continues, the financial future of the city and its citizens becomes ever more promising and secure.
Amazingly, through all these developments and growths, Hobbs remains a friendly and faithful community of varied races, religions, and beliefs, not merely coexisting, but working together...as family..as friends..as community.
It's this Hobbs heritage of affability, caring, and just plain hometown pride that makes our city a great place to live and work. Hobbs will not only continue to grow and prosper, but will remain a major economic factor in New Mexico through this century, and those still to come.
